Early Life and Education

Lil Durk (Durk Derrick Banks) was born on October 19, 1992. Originally born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Durk grew up in the Southside of Chicago in Englewood where he attended Paul Robeson High School.

Growing up Durk had a huge responsibility looking after himself and his siblings. His father was in and out of prison and was incarcerated when he was only seven months old.

While living in Englewood, Durk was a member of the Black Disciples, a known street gang in the Southside of Chicago. He dropped out of high school in order to join the gang and pursue a career in music.

Durk described his childhood experience as being very tough. His mother would often struggle to put food on the table working as a nurse. Him and his siblings would often go to sleep hungry and with no electricity. He didn’t let his struggle define him, and always wanted more for his family to make it out of their tough living conditions.

Durk began to take his music career seriously at the age of 17, and started to gain major popularity on social media platforms like Youtube and MySpace. While entrenched in the streets, he caught himself in legal trouble as a result of firearm charges in late 2011.

Lil Durk’s professional career started in 2011 when he collaborated with French Montana and Chief Keef on the label ”Glo Gang.” He then made the decision to take his own path after plans of joining the now defunct record label.

Early in his career, Durk dropped his two hit singles, ”Sneak Dissin”’ and ”I’ma Hitta”, both gaining major notoriety. The following year, he released his third mixtape, ”Life Ain’t No Joke.” The mixtape became a huge success, and has been downloaded more than 216,000 times on DatPiff.

In 2013, Durk would sign a joint-venture record deal with his rap collective ”OTF” and Def Jam Recordings. His fourth mixtape, ”Signed To The Streets”, was released in October 2013. It would be named the eighth best mixtape by Rolling Stone, and Durk was named part of the XXL 2014 Freshmen Class list.

In June 2015, Durk dropped his debut studio album ”Remember My Name.” The album debuting #14 on the Billboard 200 and included hit single ”Like Me” ft Jeremih.

In 2016, Durk released his second studio album, ”Lil Durk 2X.” The album included hit singles ”She Just Wanna” ft Ty Dolla Sign and ”My Beyonce” ft. Dej Loaf.

Later that year, Durk collaborated with several artists including; Meek Mill, Mozzy, Lil Reese, 21 Savage, and YFN Lucci. His debut single ”Like Me” became certified Gold by RIAA.

In July 2018, he announced his signing with Alamo Records and Interscope Records. He released his third studio album, ”Signed To The Streets 3”, featuring artists like Lil Baby, Lil Skies, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Gunna, Future and Young Dolph.

In May 2020, he released his fifth studio album, ”Just Cause Y’all Waited 2.” The album included his second highest charted song, ”3 Headed Goat” ft. Polo G and Lil Baby.

He would go on to gain further recognition in the music industry with his hit collaboration with Drake on the ”Laugh Now Cry Later” song. The song debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Lil Durk released his sixth studio album, ”The Voice” in 2021, reaching significant commercial success. The ”Voice of the Heroes” collaborative album ft. Lil Baby would be released in June 2021.

In 2022, Durk would release his seventh studio album, ”7220.” The album included hit single, ”What Happened to Virgil” ft. Gunna.
