Magic Johnson was born August 14, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan, United States. He is the son of Earvin Johnson Sr., an assembly worker for General Motors, and Christine, a school janitor. Johnson comes from a big family, with 6 siblings and 3 half-siblings from his father’s previous marriage.

He attended Everett High School in Lansing, Michigan, where he took great interest in the sport of basketball. At the age of 15 years old, he was dubbed Earvin ”Magic” Johnson, when he recorded a triple-double of 36 points, 18 rebounds and 16 assists. In the same season, Magic led his team to an overtime victory in the state championship with a 27-1 win-loss record. He averaged 28.8 points and 16.8 rebounds per game, which would only be the beginning of his run in the NCAA.

Magic was a five-star recruit in high school and although he got multiple offers from top-ranking colleges, he chose to play close to home. He attended Michigan State University in 1978, where he led the team to the NCAA tournament in his first year, subsequently losing Kentucky. Johnson bounced back in the following 1978-1879 season, winning the NCAA State Championship against Indiana State’s Larry Bird team.

After spending two years in college with Michigan State, Magic averaged 17.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game. Following a historic end to his two-year college stint, he entered the 1979 NBA draft.

Career

Magic began his professional basketball career with the Los Angeles Lakers, drafted first overall in the 1979 NBA draft.

Due to his tall stature, pundits believe that he should play the power forward position, however, Lakers coach Jack McKinney played him as the point guard position. Magic’s first season as a professional basketball player he averaged 18 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game. In his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers, the team reached the 1980 NBA Finals facing the Philadelphia 76ers. In a historic game 6 victory (123-107), Magic recorded 42 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. He is the only rookie to win the NBA Finals MVP award.

In 1981, Magic signed a 25 year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $25 million USD. He would later go on to be coached by legend Pat Riley in the 1981-1982 season, replacing Westhead. Despite his left knee injury, he went on to average 18.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 9.5 assists. That season, they won the 1982 NBA Finals, with Magic winning his second NBA Finals MVP Award.

In the 1984-1985 season, Magic averaged 18.3 points, 12.6 assists and 6.2 rebounds per game. He led the Los Angeles Lakers into the 1985 NBA Finals, after defeating the Boston Celtics in game 6. By 1987, Magic had another electrifying season averaging 19.6 points, 11.9 assists and 6.2 rebounds per game. He went on to win his fourth NBA title and 3rd NBA Finals MVP award. Magic went on to win his fifth and finals NBA title in 1988, in a close game 7 victory against the Detroit Pistons.
