Early Life and Education

Robert Herjavec was born on September 14, 1963. Originally born in Varaždin, Croatia. Herjavec grew up in Zbjeg, however, he would immigrant to Halifax, Nova Scotia at the age of 8 years old. The family would later settle in Toronto, Canada.

Herjavec’s father got a job at a factory in Mississauga, ON, about an hour west of Toronto. He often described his father as ”extremely tough.” He would make a large influence on his life and aspirations as an entrepreneur, living in a country where they could barely speak any english.

He worked a variety of low end jobs while coming up to support himself and his family. In 1984, Herjavec graduated from New College at the University of Toronto with a degree in English Literature and Political Science.

Herjavec’s professional career started in the mid 1980’s when he worked in the film industry as an assistant director. He worked in the Cain and Abel and ‘The Return of Bill Jack’ films. Later, he was a field producer for Global TV of the ‘Winter Olympics’ in Sarajevo.

His grit and hunger for success helped fuel his growth and access to opportunity after graduating from college. After realizing he was not qualified for a position at Logiquest selling IBM mainframe emulation boards. He would vow to work for free for 6 months in order to secure a position at the company.

In 1990, Herjavec was fired from Logiquest and would start his own company, ‘Brak Systems’. The company would achieve major success and become one of Canada’s top internet security software providers. In March 2000, he sold the company to AT&T Canada for $30.2 million.

By 2003, Herjavec founded The Herjavec Group based in Toronto, Canada. It has become one of Canada’s fastest growing technology  companies with more than $200 million in annual revenue.
