High School and College Career
In LaMelo’s first game as a freshman he scored 27 points. Later, he would score 26 points in a win over Sierra Canyon for the CIF Southern Section Open Division title. Ball helped secure the CIF Open Division State Championship, scoring 14 points in a victory against De La Salle High School. Chino Hills finished the season with a 35-0 record.
By his sophomore season, LaMelo finished the season averaging 26.7 points and nearly 10 assists per game. In the 2016/2017 season, he was named the Co-Freshman of the Year and earned MaxPreps All-American first team recognition. The following year LaMelo gained major media attention when he scored 92 points against Los Osos High School.
Professional Career
In 2017, LaMelo signed with Prienai of the Lithuania Basketball League (LKL). By his senior year he would embark on the JBA International Tour, often playing with players twice his age. In 8 regular season games with the Los Angeles Ballers (JBA), Ball averaged 39.6 points, 14.6 rebounds and 11.5 assists per game.
LaMelo signed a two-year contract with the Illawara Hawks in 2019 of the National Basketball League (NBL). In 12 NBL regular season games, Ball averaged 17 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game, shooting 37.7% from the field. He was named NBL Rookie of the Year at the end of the season.
By 2020, LaMelo was projected to be the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. However, he was drafted third overall by the Charlotte Hornets. After his rookie season, Ball averaged 15.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.9 assists, shooting 43.6% from the field. He was later named NBA Rookie of the Year.
In his second season, Ball averaged 20.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.6 assists, shooting 42.9% from the field. Despite being bounced from the playoffs in the play-in tournament, Ball was named an NBA All Star (2022) in just his second season.
