John grew up in the Hollis neighbourhood in Queens, New York and attended Bayside High School. In high school, he enrolled in a work-study program that allowed him to to work a full-time job and attend school on a bi-weekly basis.

While in high school, he discovered his passion for entrepreneurship. After graduating high school, Daymond started a commuter van service and waited tables at Red Lobster part-time. Later, he would transition into starting his business, FUBU.

Daymond’s professional career began in 1992, when he started his clothing brand ”FUBU” out of his mother’s basement in Hollis, Queens. He often credits his mother who taught him how to sew and provided him with the space to expand on his growing business.

John sold his clothing line going door to door and within the confines of his neighbourhood. Daymond and his associates sold FUBU hats for $10 each on the corner of Jamaica Avenue in Queens, New York. He once recalled making $800 in a single day, which inspired him to continue moving forward on the business.

After realizing the business’ potential, John and his mother would mortgage their home in order to acquire $100K in start-up capital for the business. He hired his long time friends, J. Alexander Martin and Keith Perrin, sewing the FUBU logo into hockey jerseys, sweatshirts, and t-shirts.

In 1993, he would convince LL Cool J, to wear a FUBU t-shirt in a promotional campaign effort. Later, LL Cool J wore a FUBU hat in a a commercial for GAP. He incorporated the line ”For Us, By Us” in his rapping.

As of September 2022, FUBU has earned more than $6 billion in sales globally.
