Growing up Gates had many small infractions with the law and would often be involved in the street life. At the age of 17 years old, him and his family would re-locate to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Kevin briefly attended Baton Rouge Community College, and later pursued a career in music. He is of African-American and Puerto Rican descent.

Kevin’s professional career started in 2007 when he signed to the record label Dead Game Records. He would release two of his first mixtapes Pick of Da Litter (2007) and All or Nuthin’ (2008), in collaboration with Baton Rouge natives Lil Boosie and Webbie.

After serving a brief 30-month sentence in prison for gun charges in 2008, he began working on his next mixtape. In 2012, he released the mixtape Make ‘Em Believe, receiving attention from Lil Wayne’s record label Young Money Entertainment. However, he would not end up singing with them.

In 2013, he signed a record deal with Atlanta Records and released his first mixtape with a major record label titled, ”Stranger Than Fiction.” This mixtape became Gates first mixtape to chart on the Billboard 200.

The following year, Gates was named apart of XXL’s 2014 Freshman Class.

After the success of his mixtapes Luca Brasi Story, and Luca Brasi 2, Gates would receive major attention from the rap industry.

In 2016, he released the hot singles 2 Phones, Really Really, and Time for That. The songs would achieve significant commercial success, and his debut studio album, ”Islah”, would peak number two on the Billboard 200.
